Our Core Values The ABC’s of Lake Cities Community Church - our Values.
Below are values that we hope will characterize our new church as we fulfill our mission and purposes. These are the colors we desire to use as we paint a picture of our church, now and into the future.
- Children – Children and youth are a great blessing and stewardship to the church. It is our desire to partner with parents in nurturing their kid’s spiritual lives through strong families and thoughtful Christian Education. Children are a vital part of the church community. Deut 6:6-9
- Creativity – Part of being created in the image of God is to use our creative talents. As God has shown great creativity in His creation and plan of redemption, we also seek to be creative in order to accomplish our mission and fulfill His purpose in us as individuals and for us as a church. Romans 8:28.
- Community – We are a "community" church because we value community! First, we believe we are called to love one another, grow in character and depth of relationships. Second, we value the community around us. This includes our immediate surrounding communities as well as those progressively farther out, unto the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8, Heb 10:24-25.
- Difficulties – While we don't seek difficulty, it is valued because God is able to redeem the most tragic circumstances and trials to mature us spiritually. Growth, sometimes, can only be learned in times of suffering. James 1:2-4.
- Diversity – We value the beauty of diversity in God's world, including ethnic, age, and gender diversity. Each person has a place at our church, whether single, married, young, old, female, male, regardless of color or ethnicity. Titus 2:1-7.
- Evangelism - God is earnest about sharing His glory and truth with those who have not heard. We value active evangelism, corporately and individually, as we share what God has done for us and extend His grace to others, giving them a chance to respond in faith. Matthew 28:19-20
- Excellence – Excellence (not perfection or excess) is our standard. God's work is worthy of our best and we are told to "work heartily, as unto the Lord." God receives our best and not our leftovers. Colossians 3:23-24.
- Families – The family is a foundational institution and was created by God. We seek to strengthen and preserve marriages, support biblical parenting, and encourage healthy family ties, both in the immediate and extended family relationships.
- Historic Christianity – We agree with theologian Thomas Oden that there is a "modern chauvinism" in many churches by giving preference to the "new" and ignoring God's work in the past. We do not exist outside of Christian history, and value the work of the Spirit through the church in all ages.
- Prayer – God works through prayer and we seek to be a church of prayer, individually and corporately. It is our way to speak to God and is valued as a privilege made available through Christ. We believe the prayers of the righteous person accomplish much. James 5:13-18.
- Preaching and Teaching – The earliest churches included a time for preaching and teaching God's Word, the Bible. We value expository preaching and godly teaching that is bible-centered and practical. The purpose of preaching and teaching is not information accumulation, but transformation of lives.
- Small Groups – In the Bible, there are both "big groups" (Jesus taught the crowds) and "small groups" (Jesus taught the 12 disciples). We value both. Small groups are critical as they provide a loving context for caring relationships. Often in small groups God works to spur spiritual growth and accountability.
- Truth – We believe that the Bible contains objective truth. The truth we are talking about it timeless and trans-cultural. It is true for everyone, at all times. We agree with the ancient catechisms that the Scripture provides "all that is needed for faith and practice."
- Unity – We value and seek earnestly to preserve unity in our church. Unity does not come through unanimity, but diversity. We seek agreement on cardinal doctrines, and loving acceptance of differences on peripheral or disputable theological or cultural issues. As a church we value peacemaking and encourage reconciliation for those in conflict. Ephesians 4, Romans 14-15.
- World Missions – An important role of the church is to send missionaries into the world to share the good news of the gospel. We value our role in becoming a “home” church to members that God calls into missions, as well as a church that supports other missionaries, as God directs. Romans 10:14-15.
- Word and Table – “Word and Table” is a phrase describing an ancient form of worship, going back to the early centuries of Christianity. It provides the congregation an opportunity to hear God’s Word, and then to respond to that Word, by renewing our commitment to follow Christ and to enjoy His presence and at the Table (Communion).
